Dear credit union partner,
Your action is needed – the House is set to vote on H.R.3354 today!
Illinois credit unions SUPPORT the amendment to remove NCUA from the appropriations process.
Congress is back in session and working on the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill. We understand that the Rules Committee has made in order an amendment by Representatives Mark Amodei (R-NV) and Pete Aguilar (D-CA) to strike the NCUA appropriations language from the bill. We strongly support this amendment and ask that you contact your Member of Congress today!
As you may recall, the House Appropriations Committee passed the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2018 on July 13th. The bill language included provisions to put several financial regulators under the Congressional appropriations process, including the NCUA, the OCC, the FDIC, the CFPB, and the non-monetary policy functions of the Federal Reserve.
At that time, credit unions expressed our concerns with the appropriators about this language that would diminish the independence of the NCUA, as well as the high probability of credit unions paying more than they do now to fund NCUA operations and examinations.
Parliamentary hurdles in the full Appropriations Committee markup prevented Rep. Mark Amodei (NV) from pushing his amendment that would have stricken Section 906, placing NCUA under appropriations, from the bill.
Congressman Amodei has been working diligently for the past two weeks to have an amendment made in order by the Rules Committee to be offered on the House floor or as part of an en bloc amendment that would strike Section 906. The Committee has now made “Amodei #31” in order, an amendment that strikes the provision. Credit unions are strongly opposed to the bill language that places NCUA under the appropriations process (Section 906).
- We urge you to contact your Member of Congress, or their staff, as soon as possible and urge them to support the Amodei amendment to Division D. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated – we are facing a vote in the next several hours! Thank you for all your efforts!

We have attached a list of talking points from CUNA here.
- We need any feedback you receive from your Member of Congress. We will be keeping a vote list to determine whether to push for a recorded vote. We need to make sure we have votes on both side of the aisle. So, as you hear back from your Member of Congress, please let Keith Sias (email@example.com) and Pat Huffman (firstname.lastname@example.org) know.
Thanks for all you do for credit unions and for your grassroots help with this important issue.
